The new National Museum in Oslo officially opened its doors to the public on 11 June 2022. The National Museum is the largest museum in Scandinavia and has an impressive permanent collection of around 6,500 objects. These range from historical design and arts and crafts to contemporary art, and offer visitors comprehensive insight into artwork traditions of the past and present. The stunning design of the museum by Kleihues + Schuwerk blends in seamlessly with the surrounding landmarks such as Oslo City Hall and the Nobel Peace Centre.

The highlight of the building is the large, bright exhibition hall made of marble and glass, which crowns the building and gives it an iconic presence. The National Museum in Oslo is equipped with state-of-the-art door solutions from GEZE that ensure a seamless and safe visitor experience. GEZE has installed more than 250 complete automatic door systems throughout the museum, including models from the Powerturn and Slimdrive series. In addition to coordinating their design, the planning and implementation of the doors focussed primarily on the factors of accessibility, safety and functionality.

To provide café visitors with accessible, safe and convenient access to the National Museum Café, GEZE supplied a complete solution for the door. A double leaf solution was required, combining automation of the swing door and a telescopic sliding door to meet the unique requirements of this busy space.

The first choice here was the GEZE Slimdrive SLT automatic telescopic sliding door drive, which scored highly due to several factors:

  • Suitable for use on two and four-leaf sliding door systems
  • Ideal for high-traffic doors
  • Suitable for interior and exterior doors
  • Connectivity and integration into the building automation system thanks to BACnet
  • Ideal for confined spaces with a small opening width clearance or little space next to the electric strike
  • Door leaf weights up to 80 kg per leaf

Installation of large and heavy doors: special solutions for the National Museum in Oslo

Powerturn F

The largest doors in the National Museum in Oslo are between 4 and 5.5 metres high, with each door leaf spanning between 2 and 2.2 metres. All doors have two leaves. The large dimensions of the doors are necessary for transporting large exhibits and they must be able to be moved accordingly. For regular operation, most of the double leaf doors are additionally equipped with a regular size leaf inside the large leaf.

GEZE supplied the Powerturn for these special solutions: the Powerturn F-IS was installed by GEZE's assembly team for the largest doors. The Powerturn F moves the regular single-leaf doors.

The GEZE Powerturn is the most powerful drive on the market in Norway today. It can withstand a high opening frequency. It also has a number of advantages, i.e. a range of functions that other automatic doors do not have. That is why it is used here in the National Museum”,

The advantages of the GEZE Powerturn at a glance

While the Powerturn F-IS is suitable for use on double leaf doors with closing sequence control, the Powerturn F is designed for single leaf doors. Both door systems are suitable for use on high-traffic interior and exterior doors and are approved for fire and smoke protection doors. They move single-action doors weighing up to 600 kg effortlessly and safely. Both Powerturn variants also stand out thanks to the following advantages, among others:

  • Smart Smart function for easy manual opening
  • Obstacle detection that interrupts the opening or closing process as soon as an obstacle is detected
  • Connectivity and integration into the building automation system
  • Push & Go function, which triggers the automatic drive after light manual pressure on the door leaf
  • Individually customisable opening and closing speed

Smooth implementation thanks to many years of expertise

Installation of the door operators on the large doors was highly complex and demanding. At least ten people from the GEZE team were in the building at all times. The installation was led by GEZE project managers Tore Ludvigsen and Jan Kristiansen, who together have many years of experience in the implementation of customised door solutions.

It is of course very special to be involved in the construction of such a project and I am very proud of the work we at GEZE have done on this national landmark.

In cooperation with the local Oslo Låsservice, which won the service contract for the building in 2021, all GEZE door operators are continuously maintained to ensure the safe use and long-term durability of the products. Project manager Sverre Thømte from Oslo Låsservice is responsible for the continuous coordination of all services in the building. "We are in contact with GEZE for service and support when things come up that we can't do ourselves. Both Oslo Låsservice and Statsbygg are very satisfied with products supplied by GEZE," says Sverre Thømte.
